Introduction to American Literature

This course introduces students to American literature from its early beginning to the contemporary era. Students will read, discuss and analyze the work of some of the main writers that contributed to the development of American literature and gave it its modern traits and characteristics. The following periods will be explored: Native Literature and the Oral Tradition The Colonial Period and the Puritan Age The Revolutionary Age (Rationalists and Revolutionaries) Rise of American Literature (Transcendentalism, Realism, Naturalism) Modernism, the Jazz Era, Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Generation Contemporary Literature and the counterculture
