Tap you finger while breaking down the word: banana. How many taps can you do? How many phonological parts can you break the word into? English words can be divided into parts or syllables. Short words are usually composed of \one syllable, while longer ones involve more than one syllable. In phonological terms, a syllable involves at least one sound. A syllable is the beginning of a rise of tone (and sometimes a fall of tone) that mark a start of end of a theological chunk within the structure of a word.
