Insertion refers to the case when an extra sound is added between two other sounds. This also takes place in the English plural rule when the plural morpheme is added to a word in ending in /s/ or /z/ sounds. The plural would unpronounceable unless a vowel is added. That vowel is usually the schwa /ə/. In some accents the schwa is replaced with /ɪ/.
